This short, sharp and focused course is designed to meet the needs of middle managers who enjoy practical skills training. It is particularly suitable for those managers who have been promoted ‘through the ranks’ and need time to reflect, review and benchmark their progress against best practice.

Session one

An introduction to the course and to the Institute of Leadership and Management. A full induction into course requirements, assessment procedures, tutorials and help available to support your success

What’s it all about?

This session looks at the achievement of objectives and how to fulfil the stakeholder needs. It offers help in translating the ‘vision’ into reality and how modern management techniques can help you to achieve this.

Session two

How to become a competitive edge multiplier      9:30 – 4:30

This session will assist the learner in understanding their managerial responsibilities and the effect their personal style has on the effectiveness of performance.

Session three

I did it my way                        9:30 – 4:30

This vital session shows how our leadership style effects overall managerial behaviour. It offers tips on delegating to motivate and empower staff and shows you how to support and understand the transition from a ‘power-over’ organisation to a ‘power-to’ organisation.

Session four

Reading and assessment development week.

Learners will be expected to spend this week emailing and receiving feedback on their WBA. Each candidate will also receive a telephone tutorial to check progress and to offer support and guidance. There will also be time to reflect and read selected articles to support learning and consolidate understanding.

Session five

Follow on regardless            9:30 – 4:30

This session aims to encourage critical debate of the nature of leadership and the role and responsibilities of middle managers in stimulating action in line with organisational goals. Homework assessed work

Session six

Assessing the emotional temperature        9:30 – 4:30

The creation of positive, productive and harmonious employee relations is at the heart of good management. This session offers the opportunity to critically review the effect of emotion on their own and others performance.

Session Seven

Get up and gone       9:30 – 4:30

This session aims to assist learners to review their ability to set direction and motivate self and others to achieve goals and targets. It will also offer an opportunity to critically analyse the current human resource planning techniques. Homework assessed work Telephone tutorials during week.

Session Eight                                                               

Fit for purpose? 9.30-4.30                                                                

This session analyses a range of methods to minimise costly mistakes in the recruitment process.

Session Nine

Empowered interviewing 9.30-4.30

This session analyses the way in which interviewing is conducted in the organisation and makes recommendations for improvement.

Session Ten

Feedback 9.30-4.30.

This final session discusses the importance and methods of feeding back, during and after interviews and of how open, honest and constructive feedback serves to enhance all communications. It also offers an opportunity to share with other learners and with the tutor valuable feedback on this learning journey. All assessed pieces of work will be collected and action planning carried out to embed learning into practice.

A work based assignment 1500-2500 words (externally assessed

An internally assessed piece of work based on the study undertaken of the two optional units M5.20 and M5.06

Learners will be expected to carry out additional reading and guided learning over and above the weekly teaching sessions.
