THE WORKING WELL PROJECTThe working well project team comprises a mixed group with management, counselling and public health skills linked to the public and private, academic and voluntary sectors. We came together because we recognised increasing problems in the workplace and new opportunities for improvement. As a group, we think there is evidence to suggest that a more holistic management style has the potential to improve productivity and performance and therefore makes good business sense. We also recognize the relevance of improving the health and well-being of the workforce. We have been exploring possible interventions in the workplace and find ourselves in agreement with the areas identified in Creating a Healthy Workforce. Alongside this, we think that focussing on innovative behavioural approaches would help to develop both personal initiative and corporate well-being. Our approach challenges dysfunctional behaviour and reassesses the role of individuality within the group and the organisation. It also addresses individual and workplace barriers to achieving optimum health and efficiency. We are currently debating various forms of delivery for this material (currently a 10 module programme) which might include educational, training and action research packages – for example, we think that our initiative contributes significantly to the Government’s Strategy for the Health and Well-being of Working Age People and Choosing Health programmes. To this end we are canvassing the views of industrialists, educationalists and key figures from Local Government and the voluntary sector to see how the programme might be adapted for differing needs. We are very conscious of the need for information and advice about how best to develop these ideas further and welcome collaborative input from fellow professionals who share our aims.
